The little-known village of Zarožje in Serbia happens to have a very well known resident - Sava Savanovic, the country's most famous vampire. According to local legend, he lives on the outskirts of the village, in an abandoned water mill, where he feeds on the blood of anyone who enters the mill to grind their grains. A standard, run-of-the-mill vampire story - except that Sava Savanovic is now hunting for a new house.
Last month, a part of the mill collapsed, apparently leaving the vampire angry and homeless. The local government responded by releasing an official statement and public health warning cautioning residents to be vigilant and protect themselves from Savanovic. According to the mayor, Miodrag Vujetic, "People are worried, everybody knows the legend of this vampire and the thought that he is now homeless and looking for somewhere else and possibly other victims is terrifying people. We are all frightened."
Garlic sales have apparently shot up in the region.
