In Beijing, gymnastics is not just for fitness classes, it is also a part of work. At 10am and 3pm each day, radios are switched on and eight-minute exercises broadcasted for state employees to perform. Although in 2010, every one in 70 people in China was obese, compared to the USA’s one in three, obesity in China is increasing by over 30% every year. In 2010, the government reintroduced the exercise scheme in the capital city (first launched in 1951) not only to keep its workers motivated and focused, but also to prevent its citizens from becoming couch potatoes.
