A 2008 survey by American Pet Products Manufacturers Association found that companies that allow their employees to bring pets to work see improved attendance, collaboration and work hours, since dogs lighten the atmosphere, ease tension and are a healthier way to take a break than coffee or cigarettes. However, pet-friendly policies come with rules. Randy Hetrick, founder of TRX, a company that encourages canine companionship in the office, says: "You wouldn't tolerate a lot of barking, snapping and snarling from the people you work with…neither should you tolerate it from the canine pals they bring to work. We're pretty clear on all that."
