Rose has been a freelance journalist since leaving COLORS in 1999. She has written for the Guardian, New York Times, Independent and many others. She has reported on Saddam Hussein's birthday party; beauty salons in Afghanistan; and an alternative World Cup football final in Bhutan. Her first book, A Life Removed, is about refugees. Her second is The Big Necessity: The unmentionable world of human waste and why it matters, published in 2008. She is now working on a book about ships.
