THE ART OF DEVOTION

Devotional art, of course, dates back to civilization’s earliest history: idealized gods etched on cave walls. How odd (and poignant) it is, then, to see our modern-day gods—actors and singers and athletes—rendered with similar earnestness on the contemporary version of cave walls: websites. With the rise of cheap-to-maintain personal fan sites and shrines on the Internet, everyone with a paintbrush—or a pencil or some charcoal—can pay tribute to a hero and invite the whole world to join in. Is there any more honest art than that which is inspired by love?
