Disabled Alpine Skiing, II South Continental Cup
Portillo
vwww.weltcup.org
Disabled skiers have been hitting the slopes since the early 1940s, when hundreds of athletic young soldiers came home from World War II with missing limbs. Today,
disabled skiers from the USA, Switzerland, Austria, Russia, Argentina, and Chile flock to Portillo to compete. In Chile’s mountainous terrain, paraplegics and double above-knee amputees abandon their wheelchairs for a mono-ski — a suspension seat bound to a
ski. Single above-knee amputees use three skis: one for their leg and two shorter ones attached to crutches.
Some below-knee amputees ski with prostheses, and visually impaired skiers race with the support of guides. |

Keelung Ghost Festival
Keelung
www.gio.gov.tw/info/festival_c/ ghost_e/ghost.htm
Taoists say that the Ghost Festival originated on the birthday of the Lord of the Underworld, when he released
“hungry ghosts” to enjoy a month on earth. Buddhists say it began when a disciple of Buddha saved
his mother’s soul from the torments of Hades by offering food to the ghosts. Whatever the origin,
ghosts are welcomed annually with sacrifices of fruits, tzungtzu dumplings, chickens, and ducks.
There are martial arts and folk-opera performances — and paper lanterns are cast adrift on rivers.
In the evening, the dance of Chung Kuei (suppressor of demons) is performed on the pier.

King’s Cup Elephant Polo Tournament
Hua Hin
www.thaielepolo.com
In this reinvention of a game first played by Mogul Indian kings, two teams of three elephants play
two chukkas of 10 minutes each. The teams in the game, curiously, have corporate sponsors —
American Express, Mercedes-Benz, Chivas Regal, etc. — but the money raised serves a good cause:
the Thai Elephant Conservation Center, which improves the welfare of Thailand’s wild and domesticated elephants. |
