Democratic Republic of Congo
“You are a danger to this country.
Your children and your grandchildren
will pay for all the harm you have
caused the nation.”
-Commander Mbonge Munene, Democratic Republic of Congo

Journaliste en Danger, a press freedom organization in the
Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), is used to being threatened.
Such as the time it protested a TV show that incited the murder
of Rwandans (whose army is active in eastern DRC); or when
it denounced the harassment of Congolese journalists who had
interviewed the Rwandan president. The following e-mail from the
previously unknown Commander Mbonge Munene (“Violent Wind”)
was received after the group criticized the Congolese media
as politically partisan. But it will have the same effect as other
threats: none. “We'll carry on doing our work,” says JED
Secretary-General Tshivis Tshivuadi. “We'll just take some
precautions.”
“Since you and your friend Mbaya continue to betray the nation
with your campaigns of lies against the DRC and its worthy sons,
La Patrie Vaincra [The Fatherland Will Overcome] informs you that
the hour of repentance

is nigh and you will pay with your blood
because you are the accomplices of those who have caused more
than 4 million deaths in this country. When the troubles being
prepared by you and your god-like leaders begin, if you are in the
mountains, stay there because your throats will be cut and the ants
of the earth you betrayed will drink your blood full of treachery
in the name of King Dollar. Your names, all of you in the JED, are
on the blacklist. We have been watching you for a long time in the
hope that you were going to change but no, you continue to betray
the Fatherland. Be immediately aware, the Fatherland you are
selling out will sooner or later overcome and traitors will deserve
nothing but death and the rotting of their bodies. We will see how
RFI [Radio France Internationale], the Americans and your friend
Ménard [Secretary-General, Reporters Without Borders] are going
to save you. We are aware of the secret meetings you are holding
in the city, but your plan is bound to fail because

you are already dead. You have been warned. A word to the wise is enough. Death to traitors and victory to the Fatherland.”
