“Communication is the only thing that separates us from animals. It has to be protected and exercised every day. There is no humanity, no life without the flow of ideas.”
-Mordechai Vanunu, 51

Mordechai Vanunu (left) is not allowed to talk to us. In 1986, he revealed to UK newspaper the Sunday Times that Israel's Negev Nuclear Research Center, where he worked as a technician, made nuclear weapons. Tricked by a woman code-named Cindy, he was kidnapped–supposedly by Israel's secret services–and spent 18 years in jail, including over 11 in solitary confinement. Now, even though he's been released, he's still confined. “They've denied me a passport and the right to talk to foreigners. I refuse to obey their orders, so let's talk. To deny someone communication is to dehumanize them. I spent all those years in isolation because I believed in the right to share knowledge, to express my views. For 11 and a half years I lived in a box, locked inside my head. Do you know what it's like not to be allowed to talk to someone for that length of time? It–s like living in a grave. Speech and communication are the definitions of life.”
