A love poem from Kabul

Love

A collective poem by the young Afghani women who attended the workshop at Kabul University. By the yellow roses by Sayyid Jamaludin’s grave he saw her almond black eyes— she is like a deer in between the oak trees.

As she walks down this long path, tries to catch a white butterfly, her red scarf slightly falls and he can see the shadow in her hair. She still does not see him, he follows her quietly, his dark black eyes imagines a ferry-moon lightening.

Suddenly she turns around, startles him— they both imagine time does not exist.

Award-winning poet and playwright Nathalie Handal taught a poetry workshop with young Afghani women at Kabul University. This draft poem is the result. The workshop was coordinated by the International Writing Program at the University of Iowa and funded by the U.S. Department of State and supported by the American Embassy in Kabul.
