Saturday, 24 September 2011: 100,000 POETS FOR CHANGE, a global initiative aimed at unleashing the power and passion of poetry, took place simultaneously (with allowable time differences) in more than 500 cities - covering the planet in almost all directions. With a specific focus on the environment and the harmony that comes from healing the land, Durban's superb and totally user-friendly programme was styled along picnic-in-the-park lines.
Now the usual line is that technology messes up the environment. But in this city it was the environment that threatened to mess up the technology so the rest of the programme had to be cancelled when it started to rain. Still, it was a great atmosphere. A soft drizzle...tranquil, serene and naturally poetic.
Another time, another place...things could have been different. But we'll always have the rain.
