On July 9, 2008, newspapers worldwide showed these four Iranian missiles in a test launch. One missile never existed.

On July 9, 2008, minutes after this photograph of Iran’s latest weapons test was published online by the Iranian Revolutionary Guards (IRG), it was picked up by news agency AFP. It soon landed on NYTimes.com, BBC News and other major news websites. Within hours, it was printed in newspapers worldwide, but blogs had already spread word that one of the missile launches in the photo was faked, a composite of the plume and dust cloud made by its neighbors. By the time the image appeared in print, the original had disappeared from the IRG website.
