Representing a separatist state proposed by Italian political party Lega Nord, the Padania national football team won every international match it played from 2008 to 2010 to become the three-time consecutive VIVA Cup champion. In 2012, it withdrew from the competition after revelations that Lega Nord had used €100,000 (US$138,000) of public funds to pay for the team’s travel expenses, and for fans’ sandwiches and drinks.

Lega Nord claims that Padanian territory includes Monaco, so when Padania hosted the 2009 VIVA Cup in Verona, the Monaco team refused to play.
