After over 30 years of armed insurgency, the Liberation Tigers Tamil Eelam were wiped out by the Sri Lankan army in May 2009. Three years later, the Tamil Tigers’ struggle to form an independent, ethnically Tamil state in northeastern Sri Lanka was revived in the form of a football team:
20 players picked from the Tamil diaspora in Europe and Canada. The team currently has no home ground or regular practice sessions.
During the 2012 VIVA Cup, striker Menan Nagulendran dedicated his three goals against Raetia “to the liberation heroes, victims of the Tamil genocide and [our] supporters.”
